Frequently asked questions.

How long before i can do sport?

I recommend waiting at least 48 hours before doing sport and where possible, one should try to not do high intensity sports (that cause excessive sweating) for a minimum of 2 weeks.

How long before i can swim?

I recommend that you should not swim for a minimum of 2 weeks and if possible 3 weeks (ideal length) due to the increased possibility of an infection by bringing your tattoo into contact with the water.

Do tattoos hurt?

This depends on so many factors, personal pain threshold, tattoo style, tattoo location on the body, how well rested you are on the day etc. But a simple answer to the question is yes, tattoos do hurt, probably a lot less than you have built it up in your mind but the pain is what makes tattoos memorable and special. If there was no pain involved, there would be no point in doing them at all.

Can i use numbing cream?

Numbing cream can be arranged when the tattoo is located in a high pain area on the body. But one should be advised that numbing cream changes the properties of the skin as well as the skins ability to absorb the ink efficiently. This can be frustrating for both the artist and the client and may effect the overall outcome of the tattoo. Numbing cream also diminishes your bragging rights.

Do you do coverups?

Yes, but it depends largely on what you wish to coverup, where it is located on the body and what design you wish to cover the old tattoo with. Contact me about this and we can discuss it and decide together if it is possible.

How do i choose a tattoo?

There are so many ways to go about this.

I would suggest writing a short list of the things that matter most to you in your life, describe your world and the people around you and the things that you love most. Places, animals, objects, music, cars, pets, beliefs, feelings, tv shows, drinks, activities, people etc. This is a great exercise in understanding yourself.

A next step would be to use pinterest to look at the tattoos and tattoo designs of others and decide what styles resonate with you. Save these images, they can be used as reference to show to the artist when discussing your idea.

Tattoo studios are also filled with flashbooks and the walls are adorned with tattoo designs. My favourite projects are often the ones where the client needs help deciding on what they want, we get inspired together and collaborate on something special.

How long does a tattoo take?

Similar to the question of ‘how long is a piece of string?’

It depends on what you want and where you want it to be tattooed on your body.

A very small symbol (heart, star, letter etc.) could take 10min, or a medium sized design with medium detail could take 2 hours… or 3 or 4 if the detail is excessive. Its all relative to the request and no two requests are ever the same!

Some tattoos such as a big back piece or a full sleeve or complicated large design could take 2 or 3 full sessions depending.

The best thing to do is to ask, contact me, lets discuss it and we can manage your expectations and develop the idea with good communication so that you know what you’re in for.

How much does a tattoo cost?

Can tattoos be removed?

Tattoo removal is possible by laser, yes, but it takes much dedication and resolve as it requires many repeat laser sessions and is also extremely painful, far more painful than getting the tattoo. Not to mention the cost!

Tattoo aftercare instructions

Keep the original protective dressing, wrap or second skin on for the time recommended (usually a few hours to a day).

  1. Gentle First Wash: Carefully remove the dressing, wash the tattoo with mild, unscented, antibacterial soap and lukewarm water, using clean hands. Gently remove all plasma, blood, and excess ink.

  2. Pat Dry: Gently pat the area completely dry with a clean paper towel. Never rub with a cloth towel, which can harbor bacteria.

  3. Initial Thin Layer of Ointment: Apply a very small amount of ointment as provided or recommended by the artist for the first few days. It must be a thin layer.

  4. Maintain Regular Cleaning: Wash the tattoo 2-3 times daily and pat dry and apply thin layer of ointment for the entire healing process (approx. 3 weeks)

  5. Avoid Submerging: Do not soak the tattoo in baths, pools, hot tubs, or bodies of water for at least 2-3 weeks. Quick showers are fine.

  6. Resist Picking/Scratching: Once the tattoo begins to peel and scab (a normal part of healing), do not scratch, pick, or peel the flaking skin. Let it fall off naturally.

  7. Protect from Sun: Keep the fresh tattoo out of direct sunlight and tanning beds for the entire healing period (at least 2-3 weeks). Sun exposure can severely fade and damage it.

  8. Long-Term Sunscreen Application: After the tattoo is fully healed, consistently apply a high SPF sunscreen to the area whenever exposed to the sun to maintain the ink's vibrancy and clarity over time.

  9. If you are in any way worried or confused about your tattoo during the healing process, contact me and I will advise you what to do.

Can i shower after my tattoo?

Yes, quick showers are fine and try your best to keep the tattoo as dry as possible during your shower. Dry your body as normal with a towel but the tattoo where possible should be patted dry with fresh paper towel, at least for the first week.
